The angry little sport subcompact from Audi delivers thrills all day and into the night. What’s not to love about a 2.0 liter turbo-charged engine that pulls hard off the line, shoves you into the seat in mid-range and screams all the way to redline? The S1 represents the upper echelon of subcompacts, with equal doses of luxury and performance. To get things moving, the S1 is all-wheel-drive, which gives it stability and confidence and, with a sport suspension and big brakes, it takes to a tossing and stops at will. If there was a time when running errands seemed mundane, the S1 will have you leaping for the keys to make sure the fridge is stocked.
The S1 is equipped with all-wheel drive, which provides more traction than its front-wheel drive competitors but also adds more complexity to the chassis. As a result, the S1 weighs 2899 lb (1315 kg), making it somewhat heavy for a supermini, although it also has only 60% of its weight up front.
The S1 uses the EA 888 codenamed engine from the Volkswagen Golf GTI hot hatch, a two litre turbocharged inline-four with 228 hp (231 PS; 170 kW) and 273 ft·lb (370 Nm) of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and only needs 14 seconds from 0 to 100 mph. The S1 has a six-speed manual transmission, a rare feature among modern Audi S cars, and reaches circa 155 mph (250 km/h) as top speed.
