The 2005 Ford GT is a supercar by Ford and was built to celebrate the Ford Motor Company's 100th anniversary with a modern road legal reinterpretation of the Ford GT40 MkII.

Description

"Point the Ford GT’s low-slung snout down the immortal Mulsanne Straight at the Circuit de la Sarthe, crack open the throttle, and as the supercharged 5.4-liter V8 begins to howl consider how well the GT embodies the spirit of the original Ford GT40 while existing as a modern supercar famous in its own right. When Enzo Ferrari snubbed Henry Ford II’s attempt to buy the Italian company, instead of getting mad, Ford got even. The Ford GT40 was his answer, and with American ingenuity and muscle won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, infuriating Ferrari in the process. For Ford’s 100-year anniversary, the new GT was developed in just 16 months by SVT Engineering with input from Carroll Shelby, pioneering new construction techniques in the process while at the same time distilling all of the gorgeous styling DNA of the original into a contemporary design masterpiece. Forget about all that and slide behind into the cockpit studded with race-inspired gauges and toggleswitches, and the GT’s combination of breathtaking power and poise on the limits prove that it’s a mid-engined monster that won’t misbehave on the track."

"Everyone knows that American cars are terrible and cars from Europe, especially cars from Italy, are better. Better looking, better driving, and usually better sounding. Fifty years ago, Henry Ford knew this. Thats why he tried to buy Ferrari and thought he had, until Enzo Ferrari looked down his Rome nose and said 'eh, you know what? Actually, you can't have it.' So Henry decided to kick Ferrari where it hurts: on the race track. He wrote a blank check and told his engineers to build a better racing car and beat Ferrari at Le Mans. An astonishingly, that car, a British chassis with an American engine, the Ford GT40 did just that. Four times. This car is not the GT 40, but it looks like one and it was made to celebrate Ferrari's humiliation. Only this time on the road not the track. Its the Ford GT, not the GT40 because unlike that car its more than 40 inches tall, so Americans could fit into it. But the idea is just the same, a great big V8, a 5.4 litre with a supercharger, and a relatively simple aluminium chassis. 220 miles per hour and, frankly, astonishing handling for a car from America. And movie star looks. I have never driven a car that attracts more attention and I drove this one a lot. Because I bought one as remarkably, at the time, there wasn't a Ferrari that was better. And thats only something that happens once every fifty years."
