"There’s a snake in the grille, instead of a pony, because this isn’t your ordinary Mustang II. It’s the King Cobra, the fanciest version on offer in the heady days of the late 1970s, when automotive visual flair was at its wildest. Available in a number of bold colors with bright red pinstripes, a huge hooded cobra menacing onlookers from the power-blistered hood, and the large “King Cobra” script on the tail and doors, there’s no mistaking it for anything else on the road. The sporty looks continue to the “lacy” pinstriped alloy wheels and the “5.0” badge on the hood bulge. The 302 cid V8 exhales through a pair of chrome exhaust tips poking out from under the ducktail spoiler on the trunk-lid. There are few cars that get you in the mood to pop in a period 8-track and rock out like the King Cobra. But if you’re not feeling nostalgic about the ‘70s performance, rummaging around in the garage will present numerous options for making this snake more vicious."
—Official description[1]

The 1978 Ford Mustang II King Cobra is a pony car by Ford that debuted in Forza Motorsport 4 and returned in Forza Horizon 2 as part of the Playground Select Car Pack.

It is featured as standard in all subsequent main series titles except for Forza Horizon 4.

Synopsis[]

The Mustang II marks the second generation of the Ford Mustang, which was introduced during the malaise era of the American auto industry. As a product of its time, the Mustang II was designed to compete against import sports cars and shared its platform with the Ford Pinto economy car.

Prior to the debut of the Foxbody Mustang in 1979, the third iteration of the Ford Mustang, the King Cobra was introduced that offered a distinct appearance package with various design elements taken from the Pontiac Trans Am.[2]

Drivetrain[]

The King Cobra of this generation uses a 4.9L Windsor V8, fitted with a two-barrel carburetor. However, due to new emissions regulations, the engine received a lower compression ratio, and now only made 140 hp (104 kW), a steep downgrade from the previous generation. This engine is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The car itself, when tested by Road & Track, reached a top speed of 106 mph (171 km/h)
