The 12C GT3 was built to compete in the FIA Group GT3, making it the first McLaren car to compete in sports car racing for the company since the McLaren F1 GTR. In 2015, the McLaren 650S GT3 was introduced to replace the 12C GT3.
The McLaren 12C GT3's 3.8L (3,799 cc) M838T twin-turbocharged V8 engine is downtuned to produce only 493 hp (368 kW) and 368 ft·lb (499 N·m) as a result of homologation, although the Forza renditions of the 2011 12C GT3 produce 539 hp (402 kW) and 463 ft·lb (628 N·m) instead.
The 12C GT3 uses a new bespoke six-speed gearbox 176 lb (80 kg) lighter than the road-going 12C's seven-speed gearbox, developed with Ricardo. The steering wheel is used directly from the McLaren MP4-24 race car.
