Prior to the introduction of the Golf, the company's model lineup mostly consisted of air-cooled, rear-engined cars, with the most successful and recognizable model being the Beetle.[1]

Since the early 1970s, Volkswagen has started to produce water-cooled, front-wheel drive cars including the Golf, which sold 29 million units[2] in 2011 and spawned numerous model derivates such as the Jetta and Scirocco.

Volkswagen AG[]

Volkswagen is the core brand of Volkswagen AG (also known as Volkswagen Group), and the second largest car manufacturer in the world after Renault-Nissan.[3]

Apart from its core brand, it also owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT and Škoda.[4]
